Sarasota, Florida’s Biased Textbook on Islam Problem

by Jerry Gordon:

Fox News radio commentator Todd Starnes was interviewed on Fox TV by Sean Hannity about the latest controversy on portrayal of Islam in public school textbooks that surfaced in Brevard County, Florida, “Public School Textbook Filled with Muslim Bias?”

During the Hannity’s America discussion Starnes made a veiled reference to “other parents” who made similar attempts to rid public school texts of Saudi influenced depictions of Islam that avoid the violence and subjugation of Christians and Jews in conquered lands during the great sweep of Jihad 13 centuries ago. A Jihad fomented by Mohammed and his warriors that depopulated Arabia of both Christians and Jews.

One of those “other parents” Starnes referred to was Aya Sewell, descendent of 18th Century Americans on one side of her family who fought for freedom in the Revolutionary war and whose later descendents converted to Judaism. On the other side of her family are Iraqi Jews with the family name of Asher, one of the original tribes of Israel. Her Iraqi Jewish forebears were residents in Babylonia after being taken as slaves following the destruction of the First Temple in 586 C.E.

The Ashers were among the 150,000 Jews ejected from Iraq following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Their properties, businesses and assets were expropriated by the Iraqi Arab nationalists. Some of those Iraqi Jews actually walked from Baghdad to freedom in Israel after the expulsion. Others came via flights from Iran. They were among the 900,000 Jews expelled from Arab lands, the so-called “forgotten refugees.”  Those refugees and their descendents taken in by Israel now constitute half of the population of the Jewish nation.

Aya has one more painful family memory – the murder of her great grandmother Massouda and her son, Ephraim as they alighted from a bus in Baghdad during the Farhud (violent displacement in Arabic).

Farhud was a two day Jihad against Jews in February 1941 that resulted in several hundred rapes and deaths. The Farhud was part of a pro-Nazi putsch of Raschid Ali in Iraq fomented by the notorious Haj Amin al Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who fled Baghdad in April 1941 after the British quashed the uprising to become Hitler’s house guest in Berlin during WWII. While there he promoted the Final Solution, the murder of Six Million European Jewish men, women and children. The murders of her Iraqi Jewish family members in 1941 were Jihad. The expropriations that they suffered after the State of Israel was born in the late 1940’s were the equivalent of jizya, a gigantic communal poll tax a form of hush money for having been spared death.  Aya’s family found sanctuary in Israel and the West.

Those bitter family memories of 20th Century Arab Muslim Jihad may have propelled Aya’s activism when she discovered a world history textbook that did not portray the Islam doctrine that took the lives of members of her Iraqi Jewish family. The textbook conveyed a portrait of Islam as a benevolent religion that tolerated Christians and Jews as protected People of the Book dismissing Judeo Christian values, the bedrock of our Constitution. That portrayal is known in Islamic doctrine as taqiyya religiously sanctioned dissimilitude, more commonly referred to as “lying for Allah”. That amounts to da’wah, the call to Islam, religious proselytizing, a violation of the separation of church and state principle in the First Amendment of our Constitution.

What concerned Aya was that her older son’s Sarasota public high school was purchasing these history texts with hers and other Florida taxpayers’ funds.  When she confronted the administrator of her older son’s higher school, she was told that the text was on the approved list of the Florida Department of Education and part of the “holistic education “for students like her son. Subsequently when her younger son attended the Charter “School of Arts and Sciences” a similar text was used.

Aya sought out the assistance of others including the Christian Action Network and Act! For America.  That association led her to the Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan that facilitated a forensic examination of the public high school world history text. Armed with that information she initiated a School district hearing about these defective world history texts laying out the forensic information about the Qur’anic verses and other doctrine excerpted in them.  The school district board defended the world history texts as consistent with the multicultural curricula objectives.

The Interfaith Racket: Passport to Credibility

Lord Ahmed

Lord Ahmed

by Douglas Murray:

Because Ahmed was the first Muslim peer, most people were eager to do anything they could to cover for him, forgive him, reinstate him time and again – and even now are not able to believe the words that came from his mouth in Pakistan because they differed from the words that came from his mouth at interfaith meetings in London.

Interfaith dialogue is one of those things it can seem impossible to be against. What reasonable, rational person could possibly object to people of different faiths coming together and discussing their differences? Well, as with any negotiation, the problem only really comes if one individual, or group of individuals, heads into the discussion ignorantly or naively while another knows exactly what he is planning to get from it.

Such is the case with much of the interfaith dialogue conversations in Britain today and there can be no better exemplar than that thrown up by an old friend of this column – the disgraced ex-Labour peer Lord Ahmed of Rotherham.

Lord Ahmed, it will be remembered is the serially expelled “first Muslim peer” in Britain. Having been hastily promoted by the Labour party, his career in public life reached a nadir a few years ago when, whilst texting on his mobile phone, the noble lord ran over and killed a man on a motorway. Ahmed went to jail for driving offenses, and has cropped up a number of times since – most recently a few weeks ago, when a recording came to light – courtesy of the Times (London) newspaper – showing Ahmed on television in Pakistan. In that interview (conducted in Urdu) Ahmed was shown, among other things, blaming his conviction and imprisonment for driving offences on Jewish lawyers and Jewish media.

Swiftly expelled by the Labour party, Ahmed had to face yet another disciplinary process (he has been reinstated before). He has now said that he does not wish to go through the process and has resigned from the Labour party. So far, so sad. But one of the matters least considered was his membership in numerous groups which held themselves out as providing “interfaith dialogue” between the Muslim community and – in particular – the Jewish community. The Joseph Interfaith Foundation, for instance, featured Ahmed as a Trustee.

The Joseph Interfaith Foundation declares itself to be “committed to fostering engagement through constructive and realistic dialogue and interaction between the Muslim and Jewish communities in Britain. The Foundation also aims to promote a deeper understanding of both faiths among the general public.” How that squares with having one of your Trustees blame the Jews for his driving offense and sentencing is a difficult question to answer. What seems at least plausible is that Ahmed – who had a long track record of sympathizing with the most extreme Islamists – used interfaith networks to give himself credibility.

Muslim American Society (MAS) and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) plan “Toward a Renaissance” convention

MAS-ICNAFlorida Family Association:

Two Muslim Brotherhood organizations and powerhouse Islamic groups that seek to Islamize America are holding a conference that is expected to draw 9,500 Muslims to Chicago during the week of Christmas.

The Muslim American Society (MAS) and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) are planning their convention titled “Toward a Renaissance:  believe, act & engage” December 21-25, 2012 at the Sheraton Downtown Chicago.   “Renaissance” means Islamist dogma based upon the conference statement “The Arab Spring associated with the Islamic Awakening in many parts of the Muslim world.”

Rick Ueno, General Manager of the Sheraton Downtown Chicago responded to Florida Family Association’s concerns regarding the convention on December 3, 2012. He wrote in part:  Please know that the Sheraton Chicago follows a non-discriminatory policy with regard to the booking of groups or events, and we intend to honor our commitment/contract for this event.  Mr. Ueno’s full email is posted at the end of this email.

There is no “non-discrimination” law or corporate policy which protects the anti-social behavior advocated by these organizations.  These groups espouse strong racism and anti-Semitism.  They advocate and lobby for Sharia law in America which is antithetical to the rights afforded all Americans under the United States Constitution.  They are associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and the entire jihad that is behind that organization.

Sadly, it appears that America hoteliers are not willing to offend Islamists but have no problem cancelling traditional America values conferences.  The Amerimar Enterprise owned Hutton Hotel canceled a pro-American, pro-Family groups’ Preserving Freedom Conference scheduled for November 11, 2011 that was designed to combat Sharia.  The Hutton Hotel cancelled the conference after receiving complaints from Islamists.  Amerimar Enterprise sided with Islamic extremists.

The Sheraton Downtown Chicago is owned by The Tishman Hotel Corporation which is headed by Daniel R. Tishman.

According to the Jewish Virtual Library “The Tishmans were prominent in Jewish philanthropies.   Among many campaigns, Alan Tishman was a vice president of UJA Federation of New York” and “Daniel was president of Israel Bonds’ Greater New York appeal.”

Given the Tishman family’s devotion to Israel and Judaism it is difficult to understand why The Tishman Hotel Corporation would allow the anti-Semitic, Hamas-linked, Muslim Brotherhood groups to hold a convention in their hotel.

According to the Anti-Defamation League:

MAS is closely allied with the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), a Muslim community organization based in Jamaica, New York. While ICNA provides various educational programs and services to local Muslim communities, it has also promoted anti-Semitism and extremism.

MAS holds its annual conventions together with ICNA, drawing thousands of participants each year. These conventions have featured known anti-Semites and provided a platform for extremist rhetoric.

At their joint convention in Rosemont, Illinois, from December 23-27, 2010, several speakers made anti-Semitic and conspiratorial remarks, portraying Jews as a privileged group with undue power. During a panel about U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East sponsored by the anti-Israel group American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Osama Abuirshaid, an AMP board member, said that the Jewish community is “revered in this country [the United States]” and spoke of “the Israel lobby” and its influence on the U.S. government. Abuirshaid asked, “How influential is this lobby in Washington?  This establishment is as committed to Israel as it is to America.”

Othman Atta, a frequent speaker at AMP events, claimed “U.S. politicians don’t have any concern for people in the Middle East, besides one group of people,” referring to the Jews. Atta then went on to lambaste Judaism, saying, “Theft, detention, denial of rights…this is all done in the name of the Jewish religion.” In front of an audience of hundreds, Atta delved into conspiracy theory, explaining that the perceived absence of WikiLeaks cables about Israel was a result of the documents being “censored by the media in the United States.” Three members of the fringe movement Neturei Karta, who regularly appear at anti-Israel and anti-Semitic events, also attended the 2010 MAS-ICNA convention.

One year earlier, at the MAS-ICNA joint convention in December 2009, religious scholars and political activists railed against Jews from both a political and theological standpoint. Rafiq Jaber, former President of the Islamic Association of Palestine, a Hamas-affiliated anti-Semitic propaganda organization, described Jews to the audience as “the worst kind of people,” who came to Jerusalem “with false pretenses.”

Another speaker, Hamed Ghazali, Chairman of the MAS Council of Islamic Schools and professor at the Islamic American University in Michigan, told convention participants in Arabic that “Allah gave us the Jews” as the primary historical and religious example of those who “take the wrong path.”

Sheikh Raghib Al Serjani, an author and physician from Egypt, declared in Arabic, “It is the duty for all Muslims to liberate all of Palestine from the North to the South, from Al Quds to the sea, it’s a duty for all Muslims to liberate one complete full land of Palestine… It’s not just about liberating Al Quds. It’s all occupied!”

MAS and ICNA sought to draw participants to the December 2009 convention by advertising two known anti-Semitic extremists from abroad as keynote speakers: Zaghloul Al Najjar, an Egyptian cleric who has described Jews as “devils in human form,” and Ra’ed Salah, leader of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, who served jail time for financing Hamas.

Although neither of the advertised speakers attended the convention, Salah was clearly praised by several individuals who did speak at the event. Omar Abu Irshaid, editor of Al Meezan online publication, and former editor of the anti-Semitic publication linked to the Islamic Association of Palestine (IAP), referred to Salah as “our great Muslim sheikh” and said, “Sheikh Raed is far more knowledgeable and far more experienced. I wish he was here to speak instead of me.”

Anti-Semitic messages are not new to these organizations. At an MAS-ICNA strategy meeting in Chicago in June 2001, Zulfiqar Ali Shah, ICNA’s president at the time, stated: “If we are unable to stop the Jews now, their next stop is Yathrib [Saudi Arabia], where the Jews used to live until their expulsion by Prophet Muhammad.  That’s the pinnacle of their motives,” according to Islam Online, a Web-based publication connected to Sheik Yusuf Qaradawi.

MAS and ICNA have also worked with the North American branch of a radical anti-Semitic and anti-American Pakistani organization, Tanzeem-e-Islami, which operates in the U.S. under the name Islamic Organization of North America (IONA). MAS and ICNA leaders have attended IONA events. At IONA’s official launching event in June 2004, Dr. Souheil Ghannouchi, MAS executive director and former president, said “I don’t think there is any difference” between IONA and MAS ideology.

IONA has also distributed anti-Semitic literature, including a book that blames the Jews for spreading usury in order to advance various conspiracies against humanity.  The book, The Prohibition of Riba, reads: “Shylock, and the world of Shylocks, in real life today, are in control of the world economy and are constantly carving out their pound of flesh from the dying carcass of gentile humanity. The supreme Shylocks of today are the bankers, of whom Jewish bankers take pride of place, the International Monetary Fund and the world Bank, in which Jewish influence is significant, and the governments of the western world which today control the global economy, and in which Jews wield significant influence.”

Anti-Semitic Iranian Feature Film: Rabbi Convinces His Grandson to Build War Machine and Destroy the World

The Blaze: The following is a movie trailer for a highly disturbing, not to mention bizarre, anti-Semitic Iranian feature film titled “Saturday Hunter.” Saturday presumably refers to the Jewish Sabbath, or holy day.

The disjointed plot focuses on a Zionist rabbi by the name of Hanan who teaches his grandson Benjamin to build a war machine that will destroy all of mankind — except the Jewish people. Aside from that, the rabbi is engaged in other behavior obviously intended to make him appear both sinister and hypocritical.

In one scene, the rabbi lecherously attempts woo a Christian woman, and later, justifies the killing of “innocent” Palestinians and indeed, the world.  The filmmakers’ attempt at “artistry” in the film’s direction only further highlights their blatantly anti-Semitic message.

Egypt Shuts Down Last Jewish Synagogue

By Daniel Greenfield

The Anti-Israel crowd likes to pretend that the ethnic cleansing of the Middle East’s Jews was an economic phenomenon. And every few weeks there is a reminder of how precarious the situation is even for the few Jews still remaining, in what was once an Egyptian city with a tremendous Jewish population.

For the first time in 2,000 years, this year there will be no Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services at the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Alexandria.

The synagogue was the last ‘working’ synagogue in Egypt. The Egyptian authorities have banned High Holiday services for ‘security’ reasons.

Levana Zamir, who heads the International Association of Egyptian Jews in Israel, comments: “It seems this is really the end of Jewish life in Egypt. The authorities have found a way to take over the last Jewish bastion, since all the remaining synagogues are already archaeological and tourist sites. It is very sad.”

If even High Holiday services can’t be held in the only synagogue in Egypt, then this is another demonstration that Jewish life in the Muslim world is simply impossible because of Muslim bigotry.

It was that bigotry which forced Jews out of Egypt.

The first Nationality Code was promulgated by Egypt on May 26, 1926. According to this Nationality Code, a person born in Egypt of a ‘foreign’ father, (who  himself was also born in Egypt), was entitled to Egyptian nationality only if the foreign father “belonged racially to the majority of the population of a country whose language is Arabic or whose religion is Islam.”

It is making life impossible for the last few who remain.

The Case for Israel can be seen in Alexandria, it can be seen in the attacks on Jews everywhere from Berlin streets to California campuses. As long as Muslim bigotry and persecution continues, an attack on the Jewish State is an attack on the only place in the world where Jews are free of Muslim persecution.

The war against the Jews

by Efraim Karsh
Israel Affairs
July 2012, pp. 319-343

The sustained anti-Israel de-legitimization campaign is a corollary of the millenarian obsession with the Jews in the Christian and the Muslim worlds. Since Israel is the world’s only Jewish state, and since Zionism is the Jewish people’s national liberation movement, anti-Zionism—as opposed to criticism of specific Israeli policies or actions—means denial of the Jewish right to national self-determination. Such a discriminatory denial of this basic right to only one nation (and one of the few that can trace their corporate identity and territorial attachment to antiquity) while allowing it to all other groups and communities, however new and tenuous their claim to nationhood, is pure and unadulterated anti-Jewish racism, or anti-Semitism as it is commonly known.

By any conceivable standard, Israel has been an extraordinary success story: national rebirth in the ancestral homeland after millennia of exile and dispersion; resuscitation of a dormant biblical language; the creation of a modern, highly educated, technologically advanced, and culturally and economically thriving society, as well as a vibrant liberal democracy in one of the world’s least democratic areas. It is a world leader in agricultural, medical, military, and solar energy technologies, among others; a high-tech superpower attracting more venture capital investment per capita than the United States and Europe; home to one of the world’s best health systems and philharmonic orchestras, as well as to ten Nobel Prize laureates. And so on and so forth.

Why then is Israel the only state in the world whose right to exist is constantly debated and challenged while far less successful countries, including numerous “failed states,” are considered legitimate and incontestable members of the international community? The answer offered by this article is that this pervasive prejudice against Israel, the only Jewish state to exist since biblical times, is a corollary of the millenarian obsession with the Jews in the Christian and the Muslim worlds.

On occasion, notably among devout and/or born again Evangelical Christians, this obsession has manifested itself in admiration and support for the national Jewish resurrection in the Holy Land. In most instances, however, anti-Jewish prejudice and animosity, or anti-Semitism as it is commonly known, has served to exacerbate distrust and hatred of Israel. Indeed, the fact that the international coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the libels against Zionism and Israel, such as the despicable comparisons to Nazi Germany and apartheid South Africa, have invariably reflected a degree of intensity and emotional involvement well beyond the normal level to be expected of impartial observers would seem to suggest that, rather than being a response to concrete Israeli activities, it is a manifestation of long-standing prejudice that has been brought out into the open by the vicissitudes of the conflict.
