How Modernity ‘Radicalizes’ Western Muslims

sharia-450x277By Raymond Ibrahim:

A new Danish statistical study finds that “Muslims [are] 218 percent more criminal in second generation than first.”  While some of these crimes are clearly related to Islam—such as attacks on Muslim apostates to Christianity—others, such as rampant theft of non-Muslims, would appear banal, until one realizes that even robbery and plunder isjustified by Islamic doctrine—as one UK Muslim cleric once clearly said.

The interesting question here is why are second generation Muslims, who are presumably more Westernized than their Muslim parents, also more “radical”?  Lest one dismiss this phenomenon as a product of economics or some other “grievance” against European host nations, the fact is, even in America, where Muslims are much better assimilated than in Europe, they too are turning to “radicalism.”

For example, some time back, Attorney General Eric Holder said that “the threat [of terrorism] has changed … to worrying about people in the United States, American citizens—raised here, born here, and who for whatever reason, have decided that they are going to become radicalized and take up arms against the nation in which they were born.”

Around the same time, Sue Myrick, then a member of Congress, wrote a particularly candid letter on “radicalization” to President Obama:

For many years we lulled ourselves with the idea that radicalization was not happening inside the United Sates. We believed American Muslims were immune to radicalization because, unlike the European counterparts, they are socially and economically well-integrated into society. There had been warnings that these assumptions were false but we paid them no mind. Today there is no doubt that radicalization is taking place inside America. The strikingly accelerated rate of American Muslims arrested for involvement in terrorist activities since May 2009 makes this fact self-evident.

Myrick named several American Muslims as examples of those who, while “embodying the American dream, at least socio-economically,” were still “radicalized,” astutely adding, “The truth is that if grievances were the sole cause of terrorism, we would see daily acts by Americans who have lost their jobs and homes in this economic downturn.”

Quite so. Yet, though Myrick’s observations were limited to the domestic scene, they beg the following, more cosmic, question: If American Muslims, who enjoy Western benefits—including democracy, liberty, prosperity, and freedom of expression—are still being radicalized, why then do we insist that the importation of these same Western benefits to the Muslim world will eliminate its even more indigenous or authentic form of “radicalization”?

After all, the mainstream position evoked by most politicians maintains that all U.S. sacrifices in the Muslim world (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.) will pay off once Muslims discover how wonderful Western ways are, and happily slough off their “Islamist” veneer, which, as the theory goes, is a product of—you guessed it—a lack of democracy, liberty, prosperity, and freedom of expression.

Yet here are American and European Muslims, immersed in the bounties of the West, and still do they turn to violent jihad. Why think their counterparts, who are born and raised in the Muslim world, where Islam permeates every aspect of life, will respond differently?

In fact, far from eliminating “radicalization,” Western values can actually exacerbate Islamic tendencies—hence why second generation, “Westernized” Muslims are also becoming more “radicalized” than their parents.

Some already known that Western concessions to Islam—in the guise of multiculturalism, “cultural sensitivity,” political correctness, and self-censorship—only bring out the worst of Islam’s “schoolyard bully.” Yet even some of the most prized aspects of Western civilization—personal freedom, rule of law, human dignity—when articulated through an Islamic framework, have the capacity to “radicalize” Muslims.

IRS FAVORED HAMAS LINKED CAIR WHILE TARGETING IRAQ WAR VETERAN WHO EXPOSED THEM

Gaubatz audited after book exposed CAIR tax fraud

by Dr. Richard Swier:

In a strange twist of fate, it appears that the IRS targeted Iraq War veteran David Gaubatz who was involved in exposing the HAMAS front group Council on American Islamic Relations(CAIR). Based upon Gaubatz’s book Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret World that’s Conspiring to Islamize AmericaRep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., and other congressional leaders asked the IRS to investigate CAIR. Gaubatz’s book called attention to CAIR’s missing IRS filings and foreign donations.

World Net Daily reports, “At the same time the Internal Revenue Service delayed or denied requests for tax-exempt status from hundreds of conservative non-profit groups, it was quietly restoring the tax-exempt status of an Islamist front group accused of collaborating with terrorists. Last year, the politicized agency reinstated the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations’ tax-exempt status despite years of delinquent tax filings. CAIR officials had met with officials inside the White House before the decision was made.”

In an email to WDW Gaubatz states, “Once my book (Muslim Mafia) came out in 2009, I got a letter from the IRS for an audit. They wanted a copy of my book, info about the Center for Security Policy, World Net Daily, etc… and then slammed me with a $146,000 tax bill. I had always completed my taxes on time and paid what I owed. I had two accountants go through my tax info, and in actuality the IRS owed me, but I am too small to fight the govt. Now they take it out of my disability pension (from war in Iraq).”

Gaubatz notes, “Anna Prillaman (IRS Tax Compliance Officer from Richmond, VA office) was reviewing my book Muslim Mafia, and wanted to know exactly which mosques I visited in 2007 and 2008…The IRS insisted I list the individual mosques.” Prillaman gave Gaubatz 15 days to respond to the tax bill.

World Net Daily notes, “Though Democrat-connected CAIR did not officially endorse Obama, many of its staffers helped turn out the Muslim vote for his re-election. CAIR boasted that its own polling showed more than 85 percent of Muslim-Americans voted for Obama. In 2011, the IRS stripped the group’s national office of its nonprofit status for failure to file annual tax reports as required by federal law.”

“During the years CAIR failed to disclose its donors to the government, it solicited funds from Libya, Sudan and other terror-sponsoring foreign governments, according to “Muslim Mafia.” CAIR is not registered as a foreign agent. CAIR repeatedly failed to file its annual disclosure report, IRS Form 990. CAIR blames a clerical error for the delinquency and claims to have completed the forms. However, several news organizations, including Politico.com and Gannett Co., have asked CAIR for the 2007-2010 documents, and CAIR has not been able to produce them,” states World Net Daily.‘

CAIR’s is an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing case, this failure to comply with federal disclosure laws is all the more troubling,” U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, the co-chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, wrote the IRS in a separate request for investigation in 2011.

9/11 warrior Myrick leaves legacy of courage

sue_myrick2-340x161Congresswoman retires after boldly sounding alarm about Islamist infiltration

WASHINGTON – Just hours before a group of U.S. lawmakers were scheduled to hold a press conference to blow the whistle on a secret plan by the radical Council on American-Islamic Relations to infiltrate sensitive committees dealing with homeland security on Capitol Hill, lawyers for CAIR contacted the group’s leader and tried to intimidate her into canceling the news conference.

CAIR’s threatening tactics, which had worked on countless other officials, did not work this time, however.

The leader of the group, Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., co-founder of the bipartisan House Anti-Terrorism/Jihad Caucus and a member of the House Permanent Select Committee On Intelligence, went ahead with the event, showing again an intrepid spirit that has marked the retiring congresswoman’s 18-year career in Washington.

At the 2009 press conference, Myrick revealed an internal CAIR memo written in 2007 that called for infiltrating the “judiciary, intelligence and homeland security committees” by, among other things, “placing Muslim interns” in those offices.

The memo was obtained by the authors of “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret World That’s Conspiring to Islamize America,” which also uncovered new evidence that CAIR directly funded Hamas and al-Qaida terrorist fronts.

Fight back against CAIR’s attack on First Amendment by making a contribution to WND’s “Legal Defense Fund.” Donations of $25 or more entitle you to free copy of “Muslim Mafia” – the book so devastating to CAIR the group is trying to ban it.

At the time, the Washington-based group was under federal investigation for terrorist activities. In court testimony, the FBI identified CAIR as a front group for Hamas, and the Justice Department named it an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorist finance case in U.S. history.

“Groups like CAIR, ISNA (the Islamic Society of North America) and others have a proven record of senior officials being indicted and either imprisoned or deported from the United States,” Myrick said. “There was a lot of evidence presented at the Holy Land Foundation trial which exposed CAIR, ISNA and others as front groups for the Muslim Brotherhood here in the United States.”

Hamas is the Palestinian branch of the Egyptian-based Muslim Brotherhood.

The revelation was alarming. Myrick exposed that Congress does not have a formal vetting process for screening radical Muslims invited to work or pray or speak at the Capitol. As a result, CAIR was able to not only place a number of employees within the Capitol, but also known terrorists and terrorist suspects.

One of them, al-Qaida terrorist Anwar Awlaki, was invited to speak and pray at the Capitol by CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad, who also helped get Awlaki into the Pentagon – outrageously, within months of Awlaki assisting the 9/11 hijackers in their plot to fly a jumbo jet into the Pentagon, as Catherine Herridge later revealed in her book “The Next Wave.”

“There is not a formal vetting process,” Myrick said. “Back in the 1990s, Siraj Wahhaj became the first Muslim chaplain to give the opening prayer to Congress. Siraj Wahhaj was also an unindicted co-conspirator in the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993.”

Wahhaj also happens to be a CAIR board member and one of its largest fundraisers.

*** LEGISLATIVE UPDATE! ***
A REPORT ON THE 112TH CONGRESS: TOP U.S. LEGISLATORS TAKING ON RADICAL ISLAM
by Lisa Piraneo, Director of Government Relations

As the 112th Congress winds down (it officially ends on January 3, 2013), we thought you might be interested in a review of the Members of Congress who have been particularly strong on national security issues over the past two years and, in particular, staunch defenders against the threat of radical Islam to our nation.

NOTE: You will be able to track the national security grade we’ve given to YOUR individual Member of Congress via our soon-to-be-released Congressional Scorecard. Stay tuned!

We feel that the following Members of Congress are at the top tier when it comes to consistently stepping up to the plate in the fight against radical Islam in the United States.
Here’s why:

Congressman Peter King (NY-3) – As Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Congressman King has a history of being active in the fight against radical Islam, but particularly during the 112th Congress. Over the last two years, Chairman King has held five hearings on various aspects of Islamic radicalization. In addition, he has been a guest on the ACT! for America TV show, a speaker on one of our monthly Chapter Leader conference calls, and has actively participated in our annual Legislative Briefings. Chairman King is a sponsor of two legislative priorities of ours, H.R. 495, the “See Something, Say Something Act” and H.R. 2623, the “9/11 Commission Review Act.” He has been a recipient of multiple ACT! for America awards, including the National Security Eagle Award, our highest legislative honor. http://peteking.house.gov/

Congressman Allen West (FL-22) – Congressman Allen West, a freshman in the 112th Congress, hit the ground running on our issues. Already well-educated on radical Islam, he has consistently spoken out about the threat, and what our nation must do about it. The Congressman is a sponsor of one of our legislative priorities: H.R. 1142, the “Global Combat Zone Recognition Act” which would award the Purple Heart to victims of the Ft. Hood and Little Rock Arkansas jihadist attacks. He also has been a guest on the ACT! for America TV show, a speaker on one of our monthly Chapter Leader conference calls, a participant in our annual Legislative Briefings, the Keynote Speaker at a National Conference Gala Dinner and the Keynote speaker at this year’s Congressional Awards Luncheon. Congressman West has also received the National Security Eagle Award for two consecutive years, our highest legislative honor. http://west.house.gov/

Congressman Louie Gohmert (TX-1) – Congressman Louie Gohmert has been a strong ally in the defense against radical Islam. A former federal judge, the Congressman has spent much time on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives educating his colleagues and C-SPAN viewers about these issues. In addition, earlier this year, Congressman Gohmert introduced an ACT! for America petition into the Congressional Record. The petition was signed by thousands of Americans expressing their concerns about changes to government counter terrorism training materials. The Congressman has been a guest on a monthly Chapter Leader conference call, has participated in our annual Legislative Briefings, and has received our National Security Eagle Award, our highest legislative honor. http://gohmert.house.gov/

Congresswoman Sue Myrick (NC-9) – Congresswoman Sue Myrick was one of the first in the U.S. Congress to take a public stand against radical Islam. She was a co-founder of the House Anti-terrorism Caucus and addressed the issue of radical Islam in the House Intelligence Committee, where she led a hearing on the Muslim Brotherhood. Congresswoman Myrick has been a steadfast ally of ACT! for America. She is a sponsor of H.R. 504, the “First Responders Fighting Terrorism Protection Act,” one of our legislative priorities; she has participated in our annual Legislative Briefings, and has appeared as a guest on the ACT! for America TV show. The Congresswoman has received multiple awards including the National Security Eagle Award, our highest legislative honor for three consecutive years. Congresswoman Myrick is retiring from the U.S. Congress at the end of this year, but we know she will continue her crusade to protect our nation as a private citizen. http://myrick.house.gov/

Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-2) – Congressman Trent Franks has been a strong ally of ACT! for America for years, speaking out in defense of our nation’s religious and democratic freedoms and against the threat of radical Islam. Through these actions and as a sponsor of H.R. 668, the SHIELD Act, legislation that would protect our nation against the threat of an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) attack (one of ACT! for America’s legislative priorities), the Congressman has demonstrated consistent leadership in the area of national security. Congressman Franks has been a speaker on a Chapter Leader conference call; he has appeared as a guest on the ACT! for America TV show, and he has participated in our annual Legislative Briefings. Mr. Franks also has received our National Security Patriot Award for four consecutive years. http://www.franks.house.gov/

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-6) – A participant in the Republican Presidential primary race, Congresswoman Bachmann has demonstrated time and again her leadership in the fight against radical Islam. She has taken the time to become educated on the threat (even attending some sessions of our annual National Conference on her personal time) and recently joined four of her colleagues in the House of Representatives to call for Inspector General-level investigations into whether the Muslim Brotherhood has impacted some of our federal agencies. Despite a vicious attack against her by the mainstream media and even some of her Republican colleagues, the Congresswoman did not back down. Mrs. Bachmann has been a guest speaker on a Chapter Leader conference call and has attended our annual Legislative Briefings. http://bachmann.house.gov/

Congressman Dan Lungren (CA-3) – Congressman Lungren, a former California Attorney General, has made national security issues a priority during the 112th Congress, in particular, the issue of radical Islam’s threat to our democratic freedoms. Particularly in his work on the House Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees, the Congressman has consistently grilled Administration officials on these matters, holding their feet to the fire. If you missed the Congressman’s grilling of Paul Stockton, Assistant Defense Secretary for Homeland Defense, you can view it by clicking HERE (trust us, it’s worth watching). Congressman Lungren has taken the time to get educated on the issue of radical Islam and further, has not been timid about speaking out about it. The Congressman addressed our members at the 2012 ACT! for America Legislative Briefing and was a recipient of this year’s National Security Patriot Award. http://lungren.house.gov/

Congressman Lamar Smith (TX-21) – As Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a member of the Homeland Security Committee, Congressman Smith has spent the 112th Congress focusing on many issues concerning our nation’s security—in particular strengthening our nation’s borders and ports. One of the bills that he introduced during this Congress, H.R. 1741, the Secure Visas Act, is a legislative priority of ACT! for America and he included an ACT! for America letter of support for the bill into the official Judiciary Committee Record. Congressman Smith has been a consistent ally of ACT! for America. He has participated in our annual Legislative Briefings and has been a recipient of the National Security Patriot Award for multiple years. http://lamarsmith.house.gov/

Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-3) – A freshman member of the 112th Congress, Congressman Duncan was another federal legislator who “hit the ground running” on national security issues, immediately educating himself on the threat of radical Islam and then aggressively addressing that threat through his work on both the House Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs Committees. Congressman Duncan is a sponsor of H.R. 3783, the “Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act” one of ACT! for America’s High Priority legislative proposals. In addition, he has sponsored one of our Hill Staff Briefings (on the issue of the Muslim Brotherhood), has addressed our members during our annual Legislative Briefings and has been a recipient of our National Security Patriot Award for the last two years. http://jeffduncan.house.gov/

Congressman Chip Cravaack (MN-8) – A freshman member of the 112th Congress, Congressman Cravaack has made national security issues a top priority, educating himself on Islamic radicalization and addressing this issue through his work in the House Homeland Security Committee. As both a former pilot and veteran, the Congressman has focused in particular on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Congressman Cravaack has been a guest speaker on a monthly Chapter Leader conference call, has spoken at our annual Legislative Briefing, and has been a recipient of our National Security Patriot Award for two consecutive years. http://cravaack.house.gov/

Congressman Frank Wolf (VA-10) – As Chairman of a House Appropriations Subcommittee that funds key counterterrorism agencies, the Congressman has a history of being focused on national security issues. He has been a vocal critic of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and was a witness at Congressman Peter King’s first hearing on Islamic radicalization. Congressman Wolf is the sponsor of H.R. 1502, the Team B Act, one of ACT! for America’s legislative priorities, and a co-author (with Chairman King) of legislation that would bring back the Co-Chairs of the 9/11 Commission to evaluate the implementation of their recommendations. In addition the Congressman has been a guest speaker on one of our monthly Chapter Leader conference calls and has spoken at our annual Legislative Briefings. He has also received our National Security Patriot Award for multiple years. http://wolf.house.gov/

Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT) – As Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, Senator Lieberman has been consistent in his focus on the threat of radical Islam. Under his leadership, the committee has investigated violent Islamist radicalization through multiple hearings (including a joint House Senate Hearing he held with Chairman King), and he ordered a formal investigation into the federal government’s conduct with regard to the Ft. Hood attack. The Senator has been a past recipient of the National Security Patriot Award. http://www.lieberman.senate.gov/

White House Review Threatens Counter-Terrorism Operations

USA Flag and SWATThe White House has initiated a secretive review of all federal law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training.  This process has already blacklisted several recognized authorities and is expected to forbid future use of terms such as “jihad” or “Islamist terrorism.”  Counter-terrorism experts and federal agents are critical of the initiative, which appears to be driven more by concerns about offending Muslims – and Muslim lobbying organizations – than by concern for American national security.  Sources in the FBI and other agencies assert that this political intrusion into the professional training system will undermine the operational capacity of government agents to fight domestic terrorism. This initiative to censor counter-terrorism training is the culmination of the Obama administration’s twin policies of identifying America’s enemy with the amorphous title “violent extremism,” and designating “community outreach” as the primary strategy for addressing terrorism domestically.  Key national security documents have already excised all terminology that associates terrorism with Islam or Islamic concepts such as jihad.  This initiative seems designed to now do the same with training, which directly counters the recommendations of the Special Report from the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, A Ticking Time Bomb: Counterterrorism Lessons from the U.S. Government’s Failure to Prevent the Fort Hood Attack.  The report states:

“DoD has conducted an extensive internal review of lessons from the Fort Hood attack but needs to strengthen policies and training to identify the threat of violent Islamist extremism, which includes the radicalization process, and to prevent radicalization of service members to violent Islamist extremism.”

An unclassified memorandum from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense, dated October 14, 2011, states that as a result of recent media attention on the FBI’s Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) training, the National Security Staff has requested all departments and agencies of the Department of Defense to provide their screening process for CVE trainers and speakers.  The only supporting documentation provided with the memorandum is a copy of an article by left-wing blogger Spencer Ackerman, whose series of articles on FBI trainers helped spark this politicaly motivated censorship program.  One has to wonder when did the Department of Defense begin taking its marching orders from 20-something bloggers?  Or, more to the point, since when does blogging in itself count as expertise?  And why is the National Security Staff more concerned about who is providing counter-terrorism training to our law enforcement and military than they are about the fact that a mole inside the FBI is leaking information to a blogger about material being taught to federal agents, texts held at the FBI library, and slides used at closed FBI trainings?

It is too soon to tell what the full impact of this review process will be, but the concern is that it will result in more events such as the Ft. Hood shooting.  If counter-terrorism professionals are not allowed to acknowledge that a person motivated by jihadist ideology, or by such Islamist ideologues as Sayyid Qutb or Abu’l-A’la Mawdudi, may be inclined towards acts of violence against Americans, how will they be able to identify and deter potential attackers?

In the immediate term, this review process should be sending up alarm bells:  it lacks all transparency; the identity of the reviewers has been kept secret; a number of trainers have been blacklisted already and the list of their names is secret; and there is no appeal process for those who have been blacklisted. The Obama Administration is right to assert that America is not at war with Islam, but to deny that a violent strain of Islam is inspiring a wave of terrorist attacks against Americans and American targets is to invite disaster.

Congresswoman Sue Myrick (R-NC), who Chairs the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, HUMINT, Analysis and Counterintelligence, has drafted a letter to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. expressing her concern that “the political nature of these reviews might inadvertently weaken our law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training programs by censoring certain language that is used to objectively identify the asymmetrical threats that are present in today’s world.”  Myrick, and other members of Congress who sign onto the letter, are asking DOJ and DOD to reveal their plans for the review process, but most importantly, they are asking for substantiation on how the changes will improve the current model of counter-terrorism training.

The recent FBI arrest of Jose Pimentel for planning to bomb police and military targets suggests that attackers motivated by Islamist ideology, and instructed by Islamist propaganda, remain a grave threat to American citizens.   It is critical that any changes to training on that threat be well scrutinized and justified and not secretly implemented merely as a way to gain political favor with one constituency or pressure group.

Letter to DOJ and DOD regarding changes to their law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training programs
From: The Honorable Sue Wilkins Myrick
Date: 11/18/2011

Dear Colleague:

It has come to my attention that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Defense (DOD) are initiating reviews of all federal law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training and education programs – specifically regarding the cultural-awareness of such programs. This is in response to media attention on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Countering Violent Extremism training.

I am concerned that the political nature of these investigations might inadvertently weaken our law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training programs by censoring language that is used to objectively identify enemies of the United States.

As members of Congress, we have the right to request that these agencies provide us information on their investigations and to evaluate any changes that are made to existing counter-terrorism instruction programs.

Below is the text of my letter. Please contact Clark Fonda in my office if you wish to sign on, or if you need any additional information. He can be reached at 202-225-1974 or at clark.fonda@mail.house.gov.

Text of the letter:

Dear Secretary Panetta and Attorney General Holder:

Recent reports indicate that your departments have initiated reviews of all federal law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training and educational programs – specifically regarding the cultural-awareness of such programs. We understand this is in response to media attention on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Countering Violent Extremism training.

We are concerned that the political nature of these reviews might inadvertently weaken our law enforcement and military counter-terrorism training programs by censoring certain language that is used to objectively identify the asymmetrical threats that are present in today’s world. As you well know, accurately defining the threat is an important step in creating and enforcing successful counter-terrorism doctrines.

In a February 2011 report issued by the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, the committee articulated a number of improvements that the government can make to strengthen its counter-terrorism doctrine. Amongst the suggested improvements, the committee recommended that the Department of Defense, “update its policies on extremism and religious accommodation to ensure that violent Islamist extremism is not tolerated. DOD should also train servicemembers on violent Islamist extremism and how it differs from Islamic religious belief and practices.” We caution that the results of your department’s reviews do not directly counter this recommendation.

As members of Congress, we respectfully request that you provide us additional information about your counter-terrorism training review processes. We would like to know the following:

·   What entities are conducting the review processes?

·   What are the objectives of the training reviews?

·   What changes are you planning to implement?

·   How will the changes improve the current model of counter-terrorism training?

We thank you for your prompt response to our questions.
