Qur’an in Context 1: “Fight Those Who Do Not Believe” (Surah 9:29)

Answering Muslims:

The Qur’an is filled with violent passages. Yet Muslims assure us that these passages, when read in context, are peaceful. In this video, we examine the historical, immediate, and extended literary contexts of Surah 9:29, which commands Muslims to “fight those who do not believe in Allah.”

Here are the Qur’an, Hadith, and Tafsir passage cited in the video:
Qur’an 9:28—O ye who believe! Truly the Pagans are unclean; so let them not, after this year of theirs, approach the Sacred Mosque. And if ye fear poverty, soon will Allah enrich you, if He wills, out of His bounty, for Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Qur’an 9:29—Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
Qur’an 9:30—The Jews call Uzair a son of God, and the Christians call Christ the son of God. That is a saying from their mouth; (In this) they but imitate what the Unbelievers of old used to say. Allah’s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth!
Qur’an 9:31—They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah, and (they take as their Lord) Christ, the son of Mary; yet they were commanded to worship but One God: there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (Far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).
Qur’an 9:32—Fain would they extinguish Allah’s Light with their mouths, but Allah will not allow but that His Light should be perfected, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).
Qur’an 9:33—It is He Who hath sent His Messenger with Guidance and the Religion of Truth, to prevail it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it).
Qur’an 5:51—O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other.
Qur’an 9:73—O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them.
Qur’an 9:111—Surely Allah has bought of the believers their persons and their property for this, that they shall have the garden; they fight in Allah’s way, so they slay and are slain.
Qur’an 9:123—O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness.
Qur’an 47:35—Be not weary and fainthearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost.
Qur’an 48:29—Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.
Sahih Muslim 30—Muhammad said: “I have been commanded to fight against people so long as they do not declare that there is no god but Allah.”
Sahih Muslim 4366—Muhammad said: “I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslims.”
Sunan An-Nasa’i 3099—The Prophet said: “Whoever dies without having fought or having thought of fighting, he dies on one of the branches of hypocrisy.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 2763—The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever meets Allah with no mark on him (as a result of fighting) in His cause, he will meet Him with a deficiency.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 6922—Allah’s Messenger said, “If anyone changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.”

  1. First, sorry for my poor English.
I’m not specialised in Sharia, I’m just a Muslim likes his relegion. So, my defence maybe weak, but that’s just what I believe in.
All cotexsts mensioned above are controlled by the following contexsts:

    190. And fight in the Way of Allâh[1] those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allâh likes not the transgressors. [This Verse is the first one that was revealed in connection with Jihâd, but it was supplemented by another (9:36)].
    191. And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [1] is worse than killing. And fight not with them at Al-Masjid-Al-Harâm (the sanctuary at Makkah),[2] unless they (first) fight you there. But if they attack you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

    192. But if they cease, then Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

    193. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allâh) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allâh (Alone).[3] But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zâlimûn (the polytheists, and wrong-doers)
    194. The sacred month is for the sacred month, and for the prohibited things, there is the Law of Equality (Qisâs). Then whoever transgresses the prohibition against you, you transgress likewise against him. And fear Allâh, and know that Allâh is with Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – See V.2:2).
    Surah Albaqarah(2- 190,191,192,193,194)
    ==========================================and ….

    7. Perhaps Allâh will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as enemies. And Allâh has power (over all things), and Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

    8. Allâh does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion nor drove you out of your homes. Verily, Allâh loves those who deal with equity.

    9. It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allâh forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers – those who disobey Allâh).
    Surah Almomtahenah (60 – 7,8,9).
Please, If you want to know the truth, read all Quran, don’t split or separate.

  2. Salam,

“Please, If you want to know the truth, read all Quran, don’t split or separate.

I see how you see, and I won’t say you are blind, because you see.
But If you see what you see WHY is that so many other doesn’t see ?
And I’m talking About Muslims Shouting About Killing …Killing and Killing
And Why Then So many Killings In Islamic Countries and Elsewhere When Allah Should be so Merciful.

Or then If Allah is so merciful why not then his servants ?

So it could mean that those who kill in the name of Allah are not his servant,
So why the Muslims doesn’t fight those who use the name of Allah for committing all sort of crimes, why can we ear voices from the Muslims to tell them how wrong they are and by showing them your views on the Quran ? That THEY “read all Quran, and don’t split or separate”

  3. Your problem is that you just like to Islam a terrorist religion show while you’re Christians or Jews, you are causing unrest in the world.

    Example: America And Israil

    God has no Son.

Anyone who does not believe in God, God loves it? God don’t love kafir

Qura’n Is True because word of god

    Quran: 79: 42-43-44-45-46

they will question you about the hour: ‘when shall it be?
but how are you to know?
its final end is for your lord.
you are but a warner for those who fear it.
on the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had lingered but an evening, or, a morning.

Day of Resurrection Allah will judge between you and us
