Ohio Arrest Shows Threat to U.S. from Al-Qaeda in Syria

ohiolg_0

What now for the U.S.’ relationship with Al-Nusra after an American goes to Syria for jihadist training and returns to commit terrorism?

Clarion Project, by Ryan Mauro, April 19, 2015:

Al-Nusrah American citizen Abdirahman Sheik Mohamud was indicted after a cleric associated with Jabhat al-Nusra (Al-Qaeda in Syria) ordered him to carry out an attack here, the Justice Department announced. His plot to attack a military base in Texas was thwarted. The involvement of Al-Nusra will make it difficult for the U.S. to keep looking the other way as it gains territory in Syria.

Originally from Somalia, Mohamud grew up in the U.S. He lives in Columbus, Ohio and Islamist radicalism seems to be a family affair in this case. His brother died fighting for Al-Qaeda in Syria and was apparently a major influence in Mohamud’s radicalization.

Their younger brother, Abdiqani Aden, was arrested earlier this month during a visit to Mohamud because he made a gun symbol with his hands and pointed towards the sheriff’s deputies. He was speaking in a foreign language at the time. This is especially threatening because Mohamud’s second-choice target was a prison.

The government’s monitoring of communication between the two older brothers shows their motivations were not frustration with U.S. foreign policy or personal trials. They were inspired by a glorification of those who die in violent jihad and a belief that such “martyrs” are guaranteed entry into heaven.

His brother left the U.S. in May 2013 and went to Syria to link up with Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda’s Syrian wing. Mohamud’s travel arrangements involved Al-Nusra members and that is presumably the group he joined, but his online postings showed his loyalty was with ISIS. Al-Nusra facilitators appear to have been surprisingly unconcerned by this.

This may indicate the rift between the leadership of ISIS and Al-Qaeda isn’t necessarily trickling down to most of the membership. The attacks in Paris are another example where Al-Qaeda and ISIS supporters worked together despite the quarrels of their leaders.

His brother was killed in June 2014 and he returned home afterwards. Mohamud told a close associate that he completed his training with an unidentified terrorist group in Syria and a cleric told him to return to the U.S. to carry out an attack. The indictment charges Mohamud with providing material support to Al-Nusra, so it appears that he never joined ISIS.

Mohamud began plotting but two unidentified individuals close to him reported their dialogues to the FBI and likely recorded them. One was a friend of his for three years and all indications point to one or both of these informants being Muslim. This is another example of why the demonization of informants by groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is so dangerous.

Mohamud decided his preference was to attack a military site with a prison as a backup option. He chose a base in Texas and hoped to execute three or four U.S. soldiers before achieving “martyrdom.” The FBI arrested him before he could start putting the details together.

The cleric’s involvement is an important detail because it threatens to unravel the Obama Administration’s façade that Al-Nusra isn’t a direct threat to America. It also indicates the group is putting an increased emphasis on hitting us at home.

The U.S. realized in September the air campaign against ISIS needed to include a unit within Al-Nusra named the Khorasan Group that was orchestrating terror plots against the West. The problem is that Al-Nusra is much more popular than ISIS and works closely with other Syrian rebels, including ones the U.S. supported and anticipated relying upon to fight ISIS on the ground.

The desire to avoid alienating Al-Qaeda-allied Syrian rebels and their supporters led the Obama Administration to begin promoting a myththat the Khorasan Group is an independent entity that is somehow illogically linked to Al-Qaeda but not Al-Nusra. The New York Timesrepeated it in its coverage of this case.

The myth is harmful to U.S. interests and anti-Islamist Syrians because it distances Al-Nusra from Al-Qaeda, thereby giving it a higher ceiling of public support. A Zogby poll in November found the population of Turkey favors Al-Nusra above all other participants in the Syrian civil war. A whopping 40% of Turks support Al-Nusra the most.

The indications are that Mohamud’s Syrian cleric is from Al-Nusra but it’s still significant he’s in ISIS because that would mean it is now dispatching operatives from the region to America. That would be a shift from relying on so-called “lone wolves” inside the U.S. who plan terrorism because they’ve determined that traveling to the Caliphateis unlikely to succeed.

It is true that Mohamud’s case is important because it’s the first publicly-acknowledged case of an American going to Syria for jihadist training and returning home to commit terrorism, but there’s a bigger point to be made. The U.S. is at war with Jabhat al-Nusra because it is at war with Al-Qaeda. If a Syrian rebel partner doesn’t approve of the U.S. recognizing that unavoidable fact, then that’s not a partner worth having.

‘Rushing’ to War with Iran?

AyatollahAliKhamen_2162837b-450x346by :

In November, there was some talk of “a march (or rush) to war” against Iran.

The Obama Administration used this line to dismiss those – including EMET – who dared to disbelieve the sincerity of negotiations regarding the Iranian regime’s program to develop nuclear weapons, and seek to expand U.S. sanctions against that nation so as to keep the pressure on them to prove their sincerity.

The major problem with this charge is that Iran and the U.S. are already at war.  And every few years, Iran or its proxies (most especially Hezbollah) conducts another hostile act, which results in the death or harming of Americans.

Here are just some of the acts of war Iran has conducted against the U.S.

In 1979, Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy, and took 52 (originally 66) of its personnel hostage for 444 days.  Iranian Foreign Minister I. Yazdi, along with other Iranian officials, indicated official Iranian support for the seizure when he said, “The action of the students enjoys the endorsement and support of the government.”  Reza Kahlili describes the seizure in his book A Time to Betray: The Astonishing Double Life of a CIA Agent Inside the Revolutionary Guards of Iran:

This was not a rout.  It was not an act of passion.  It seemed too managed for that.  The people who rushed in seemed to know one another and to know what to do.  Military members of the Guards arrived quickly.  I wondered how they heard about the break-in so fast.  Then the Komiteh, the religious police recently given official status by Khomeini, came and promised to keep order.  But the only thing they kept orderly was the takeover itself.  Busloads of people arrived and joined the demonstration, another sign that this gathering was not spontaneous.  Within minutes, the protesters controlled the compound.

For its illegal actions, the Iranian regime was cited by the International Court of Justice and by the U.N. through two U.N. Resolutions for its violation of Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 the international treaty that governs diplomatic immunity.

Iran set up, continues to support, and often directs, Hezbollah, a State Department-listed Lebanese terror group that has kidnapped, tortured, harmed, and/or killed Americans.  In 1983, Hezbollah bombed the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut and killed 241 American servicemen who were sent to Lebanon for peacekeeping purposes.  Hezbollah is believed to have kidnapped and tortured to death U.S. Army colonel William Higgins and the CIA Station Chief in Beirut, William Buckley.  It kidnapped around 30 other Westerners between 1982 and 1992.  Imad Mughniyah, a former senior Hezbollah leader, was, prior to 911, “responsible for the deaths of more Americans than any other terrorist.”  He and two other members of Hezbollah, Hasan Izz-al-Din, and Ali Atwa, were on the FBI’s list of 22 Most Wanted Terrorists for the hijacking in 1985 of TWA Flight 847 during which a U.S. Navy diver was murdered.  In 2007, Hezbollah operative Ali Mussa Daqduq allegedly played a significant role in the killings of five U.S. soldiers in Iraq.  In 2011, the U.S. government seized drug profits linked to Ayman Joumaa, a drug trafficker and money launderer, linked to Hezbollah, and in April 2013, the U.S. Treasury Department took action against Hezbollah for working as a drug cartel.

Iran was involved in the 911 terrorist attacks.  A U.S. District Judge “ruled that Iran and Hezbollah materially and directly supported al Qaeda in the September 11, 2001 attacks and are legally responsible for damages to hundreds of family members of 9/11 victims who are plaintiffs in the case.”  Also, post-911, the Iranian regime protected members of al-Qaeda, including the son of Bin Ladin, even as the latter planned and implemented other bombings that wounded or killed civilians.  Because of these and many other actions, the U.S. State Department describes Iran as the “leading sponsor of anti-U.S. Islamic terrorism.”

This position is neither controversial nor partisan.  Jeffery Goldberg noted in The Atlantic, Iran is “is waging war against the United States of America” in Iraq.  Michael Ledeen writing in The Weekly Standard, reaches the same conclusion saying, “(T)here is abundant evidence for Iranian involvement in Iraq, most including their relentless efforts to kill American soldiers.  The evidence consists of first-hand information, not intelligence reports.  Scores of Iranian intelligence officers have been arrested, and some have confessed.  Documentary evidence of intimate Iranian involvement with Iraqi terrorists has been found all over Iraq, notably in Fallujah and Hilla.”

These facts have been widely reported. During the U.S. occupation of Iraq (from 2003-2011), hundreds of American soldiers were killed or wounded byroadside bombs or other weapons that were constructed, and supplied, by Iran to Iraqi rebels.  The Iranians gave these IEDs to both Shiites and Sunnis alike.

Doesn’t This Matter?

AMACby Justin O Smith:

Increasingly, it appears that many of our so-called “educators” do not have any qualms in aiding and abetting the Muslim Brotherhood’s 25 Year Plan and the American Muslim Advisory Council’s dawa/proselytizing efforts, as they approve indoctrination events and textbooks across the U.S. and here in Tennessee, that describe the process for converting to Islam and teach how to pray like Muslims. Islam is presented in false and glowing terms as “a religion of peace,” which only serves to advance the agenda of wealthy Saudi Arabian Wahabis and other islamofascists; these “educators” affirm an undeserved stature of Islamic superiority, which traps Muslim children in a cycle of Sharia law/doctrine abuses perpetrated under a controlling tribal and unreformed freedom-killing ideology, and this also creates greater opportunities for the indoctrination of vulnerable groups of American children!

In early 2010, Minnesota’s ACLU sued St Paul’s public k-8 Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy for violating the ban against government religious advocacy; Massachusetts schools adopted a Notebook advocated by Harvard’s Middle Eastern Studies Center that claims Muslim explorers discovered the New World and Native Americans had Muslim names; and, in September of 2010, the Texas Board of Education drew heavy criticism after issuing a texbook resolution asking publishers to fix the “pro-Islamic/anti-Christian half-truths, selective disinformation, and false stereotypes” that riddled the textbooks, just as the case has been in Williamson, Rutherford and now Sumner Counties in Tennessee…for example, the brutal and violent conquests of Christian lands by Muslims is now referred to as “migrations” of “empire builders.”

On September 11, 2013, Sheridan Middle School (Arkansas) Superintendent Brenda Haynes argued that inviting a Muslim guest speaker, on this day of tragic memories for most of us, was motivated by pure intentions. “There was no thought of having this person address the classes to point Islam as ‘a religion of peace’,” Haynes stated. If there was truly “no thought” of such a scenario arising, how interesting is it that she felt compelled to mention it?

And, what a feeling of shock and disgust must have coursed through parent’s minds upon hearing that Principle Peter Badalament read a Muslim prayer over Concord-Carlisle High School’s (Boston) intercom system, instead of reading the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States; the poem, by Syrian-American poet Mohja Kahf, is contemptuous of America and Americans in general.

Islam is the ideology of death. It demands to this day the deaths of anyone who leaves it, and it regularly demands the deaths of adulterers, homosexuals, infidels, Jews, Christians, and even other Muslims who practice a less strict form of Islam.

Many Americans become offended and indignant over any suggestion, even when presented with proof, that child marriage, honor killings and female excision are, right this very instant, a very real fact of life for many Muslim girls in homes all across America; if 95% of Egyptian girls are genitally mutilated, what percentage of Egyptian girls born in the U.S. are circumcised? None? I don’t think so.

When educators in the U.S., out of a misguided notion founded in diversity, multiculturalism and the desire not to stigmatize Muslims, do not present any information about Muslim women kept from working and being productive, given frequent beatings and forced into arranged marriages that are approved by their parents, communities and imams/preachers, they deny countless Muslim girls their right to be free from this backward culture; they fail to live up to the ideas and values of our democratic republic, and they dishonor the memory of those American women who fought so long and hard for equal rights!

Is there nothing beautiful in Islam? Beautiful architecture and the encouragement of charity, yes, but Islam is built on sexual inequality and on surrender of individual responsibility and choice. This is not just ugly; it is monstrous.

 Lema Sbenaty

Lema Sbenaty

Sure, these things do not happen to all American Muslims, since some Muslims have assimilated better than others; however, we still see thousands of radical Muslim students, young men and women born in the United States, such as Lema Sbenaty of Murfreesboro, TN – a Muslim Student Association (MSA)/Muslim Brotherhood supporter, Islamic sympathizers and liberal educators, who have so manifestly benefitted from every advantage of Western education, ignore the profound differences between a theocratic mind-set and a democratic mind-set.

Sbenaty tells her associates in the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament organization that “We are Muslims in non-Muslim countries. As such, it is the duty of each and every one of us to inform and educate others about Islam… emphasize that your MSA is for anyone interested in… clearing misconceptions about Islam. This may facilitate school approval.” And, this would give her and other adult Muslim women access to young high school students for the purpose of “educating”/indoctrinating them about Islam.

Susan Douglas

Susan Douglas

All of this has contributed to the national dynamic, which has created a sanitized version of Islamic history and dogma that has infiltrated U.S. public textbooks over the last two decades; a great amount of this occurred through the efforts of Muslim convert Susan Douglas, from the Institute on Religion and Civic Values, who wrote lesson plans, advisories, guidelines and pamphlets to soft the image of Islam in public schools for ten years. Central to her works is the ‘Teacher’s Guide to Religion in the Public Schools’, which was promoted as an interfaith ‘First Amendment’.

Surely, we can flatly state, “Islam, based on the Quran, that denies women basic human rights is backward,” even if only as an opinion. And, since this is a valid criticism, ignoring the practice of victimization of women that stems from the Quran only adds harm to its victims: Free speech is the bedrock of liberty and a free society. And yes, it includes the right to blaspheme and offend.

Doesn’t this matter to all those clever young Muslim girls in America, such as Lema Sbenaty?

A lot of Americans, some well intentioned and some not, have a hard time accepting that all human beings are equal, but all cultures and ideologies are not. A culture that values women as masters of their own lives is better than a culture that mutilates young girls and confines them behind walls or murders them for falling in love. A culture that protects women’s rights… where a woman can be appointed to the U.S Supreme Court… is better than a culture that denies a woman’s inheritance rights and dishonors her by questioning her truthfulness as a rule of law. The American culture guided by the Western Enlightenment and the U.S. Constitution is better than anything Islam can offer or has ever offered!

There is a problem with Islam. By ignoring the facts, you, the Muslim student or adult…the “educators”, fail your community. If the goal is to truly seek the truth, which education and textbooks are suposed to provide, then no one can deny that a strict interpretation of Islam is preparation for bigotry, widespread strife and oppression. You cannot deny the link to Islamic beliefs and the failure of Islamic societies to provide peace, opportunity and prosperity to their people. No matter which Islamic country you call you ancestral “home”, you are no longer living there for a reason, so embrace the better life your parents sought for you, by giving birth to you in America or by bringing you to America. And, if you believe there should be Sharia law in America, go home and take a look at what it’s really like!

Cultural Jihad: Hollywood Documentary to Mock “Islamophobes”

muslims_are_coming_posterby Pamela Geller:

Politico reported Monday that “two comedians are tackling the sensitive topic of Islamophobia in the way they know best: laughter.” The article, entitled “Film tackles Islamophobia with humor,” puffs up Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah, “the co-directors of ‘The Muslims Are Coming!’ which tracks a group of Muslim-American stand-ups as they perform across the country and tackle people’s stereotypes.”

We aren’t even allowed to discuss Islam and the doctrine of jihad in the mainstream media, but “Islamophobia” is a matter for comedy? How perfect: making fun of a subject that the American people don’t even begin to understand because of the prohibition on the subject matter.

The slaughter of religious minorities under Sharia is hardly a laughing matter. Neither areNew York on 9/11Madrid on 3/11London on 7/7, the Bali bombingBeslanBoston,Mumbai and the over 20,000 jihad terror attacks worldwide since 9/11. The vicious oppression and slaughter of Christians in NigeriaIndonesiaEgyptEthiopiathe Philippines, and Lebanon is not funny. The slaughter of Hindus and Buddhists through jihad is not funny.

And make no mistake: those tens of thousands of acts of jihad violence are what lead to caution concerning devout Muslims. It doesn’t come out of nowhere. There is a body count in the millions. It isn’t the work of people who are accused of being “Islamophobes.” And even less funny is that we can’t talk about it. Those few voices of truth who dare to speak on this subject matter are marginalized, demonized and rendered radioactive.

So the new cultural jihad is to make it cool and happening and now to make fun of the people who do talk about it at risk of their reputations and livelihoods and personal safety.

The Woolwich Killing: “We must fight them as they fight us.”

ScreenShot2013-05-22at20733PM_zps08ad9ab5MAY 22, 2013, By Mark Durie:

Today in Woolwich, England, a man reported to be a British soldier was cut down by two Anglo-African Muslims wielding knives and a machete.  One of the killers, speaking in a home-grown English accent, is heard on video to say:

There are many, many ayah [verses] throughout the Koran that says we must fight them as they fight us, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I apologize that women had to witness this today but in our land women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.

(An earlier version of this post had a less accurate translation.)

Eyewitnesses said that the victim had been wearing a ‘Help for Heroes’ t-shirt.  Help for Heroes is a charity to help British soldiers wounded in current conflicts.

Eyewitnesses also reported that the killers attempted to behead the soldier, and that they asked bystanders to call the police, and moved towards the police as if to attack them, as soon as they appeared.

While some said the killers were crazed, the contrary seems to be the case.  They appear to have been acting in accordance with a theologically determined logic which can be understood on the basis of Islamic teachings.  In the midst of perpetrating this carnage, they found time, calmly and clearly, to explain their motivations on camera.

The killer captured on video was referencing passages from Islamic sacred texts. “We must fight them as they fight us” is a reference to a phrase found repeatedly in the Koran:

fight in the cause  of Allah those who fight you … And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for fitnah (oppression, persecution) is worse than slaughter; …  if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith. ” (Sura 2:190-9)

fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together”  (Sura 9:36)

Permission to fight (against disbelievers) is given to those(believers) who are fought against, because they have been wronged and surely, Allah is Able to give them (believers) victory” (Sura 22:39)

The Arabic word for ‘fight’ used in the Koran in these passages is qātilūwhich literally means fighting to kill.  (See here for an explanation of the meaning of Sura 2:190-91, a passage used by Muslim jurists to justify killing.)

The reference ‘an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth’ is also from the Koran (although ultimately borrowed from several passages in the Mosaic law):

And We prescribed for them therein: The life for the life, andthe eye for the eye, and the nose for the nose, and the ear for the ear, and the tooth for the tooth, and for wounds retaliation. (Sura 5:54)

The Muslim killers here are invoking a religious ruling that it is permissible to fight and kill people who wage war against Muslims.  As Bin Ladin put it in his letter to the American people:

“It is commanded by our religion and intellect that the oppressed have a right to return the aggression. Do not await anything from us but Jihad, resistance and revenge.”

The belief which seems to underly the Woolwich attack is that because the British government is fighting a war against Muslims in Muslim lands, it is therefore legitimate for Muslims to wage jihad against the British.  British people, who voted the government into power, are also considered to be personally culpable, which is why they ‘will never be safe’ and are told to ‘remove your government’.

The killer’s language is strikingly reminiscent of Bin Ladin’s November 2002 letter to the American people, in which he not only spoke of ‘removal’ of governments (in Muslim lands), but also explained that it was legitimate to attack American civilians because they are the ones who voted their government into power:

“… the American people are the ones who choose their government by way of their own free will; a choice which stems from their agreement to its policies. … The American people have the ability and choice to refuse the policies of their Government and even to change it if they want. … the American army is part of the American people. … This is why the American people cannot be not innocent of all the crimes committed by the Americans and Jews against us. … Allah, the Almighty, legislated the permission and the option to take revenge. Thus, if we are attacked, then we have the right to attack back. …  whoever has killed our civilians, then we have the right to kill theirs.

The phrase ‘you people will never be safe’ is reminiscent of Muhammad’s instruction to his followers to invite non-Muslims to Islam by telling them aslim taslam “Accept Islam and you will be safe” (see here).  The implication is that non-Muslims are not safe because their blood and property can be taken until they convert.  Thus Muhammad said to his cousin Ali, on the eve of the attack against the Jews of Khaibar:

“Fight (qātilū) until they bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger [i.e. until they convert to Islam] and when they do that, then their blood and their riches are inviolable [safe] from your hands.” (Sahih Muslim. Book of the Merits of the Companions of the Holy Prophet 4:29:5917).

It seems  the killers desired martyrdom in accordance with their beliefs, because they asked bystanders to call the police and immediately moved to attack the police when they arrived on the scene.

This slaughter on the streets of Woolwich has all the hallmarks of a theologically motivated attack, and keys to understand it can be found in the Qur’an and the teachings of Muhammad.

Whether the views adopted by the killers are ‘legitimate’ interpretations of the Koran and Muhammad’s teachings may be disputed.  What cannot be disputed is the source where they found their inspiration.

Center Urges Select Committee to Make Real Progress on Benghazigate Scandal

-120030598

Center For Security Policy:

Republican leaders of five House committees with national security jurisdictions have issued today a “progress report” (PDF) on the fruits of their respective efforts to investigate the murderous jihadist attack on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012.  The most important take-away is that, more than seven months after that outrage, these committees still do not know precisely what happened.

More to the point, the report indicates that the five committees intend to continue their investigations.  It seems predictable that months spent on more of the same, business-as-usual inquiries will produce more of the same stonewalling by the executive branch, a host of still-unanswered questions and a continuing lack of accountability for the policies that got us into this fiasco in Libya, for the conduct during the attack and for the cover-up that was perpetrated at the highest levels of the Obama administration.

Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., President of the Center for Security Policy, responded to the issuing of this report by renewing the Center’s call for the establishment, instead, of a select committee to get to the bottom of the Benghazigate scandal.

The American people are entitled to know the truth about what happened before, during and following the attack last year in Benghazi on 9/11.  While the existing, standing committees have shed some light on pieces of this sordid affair, it is now evident that that truth simply is unlikely to be forthcoming in the absence of an aggressive investigative effort with real teeth.

We believe this progress report reinforces the request recently made by 700-plus Special Forces veterans urging Congress to establish a select committee pursuant to House Resolution 36, sponsored by Rep. Frank Wolf and a majority of the House Republican caucus.  It is time for real progress and a select committee evidently is necessary to get it.

Concerned citizens can help get this select committee established by urging their representatives to endorse H.Res.36 by going to www.EndtheCoverup.com.
