Fired NSC Aide Reveals Political Warfare Operation Targeting Trump

Washington Free Beacon, by Bill Gertz, Aug.  11, 2017:

A White House National Security Council official has charged that leftist opponents of President Trump are engaged in political warfare operations designed to subvert his presidency and drive him from office.

Rich Higgins, until recently director of strategic planning at the NSC, revealed the program in a seven-page memorandum produced in May that warns of a concerted information warfare campaign by the Marxist left, Islamists, and political leaders and government officials opposed to the populist president.

“The Trump administration is suffering under withering information campaigns designed to first undermine, then delegitimize and ultimately remove the president,” Higgins states.

“This is not politics as usual but rather political warfare at an unprecedented level that is openly engaged in the direct targeting of a seated president through manipulation of the news cycle,” he said.

Higgins, an Army veteran and former Pentagon official who specialized in irregular warfare and who was dismissed last month for writing the memo, said the attacks should not be confused with normal partisan political attacks or adversarial media attention.

The former aide criticized the White House for failing to counter the activities and said the political warfare attacks threaten the Trump presidency.

“The White House response to these campaigns reflects a political advocacy mindset that it is intensely reactive, severely under-inclusive and dangerously inadequate to the threat,” he said. “If action is not taken to re-scope and respond to these hostile campaigns very soon, the administration risks implosion and subsequent early departure from the White House.”

Higgins was fired by the national security adviser, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, July 21 after the memo came to McMaster’s attention as part of an internal search for leaks from the staff.

Higgins’s firing, along with that of two other NSC conservatives, Derek Harvey and Ezra Cohen-Watnick, has set off political infighting and charges from conservatives that National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster is opposing Trump’s populist policies in favor of maintaining the policies of the former Obama administration.

Harvey, a retired Army colonel, recently complained to McMaster about the large number of officials who were kept on at the NSC from the Obama administration. He was told by McMaster that he has a “leadership problem,” according to people close to the matter.

Cohen-Watnick was senior director for intelligence programs at the NSC and ran afoul of McMaster because of his conservative views.

A White House official said McMaster appears to be trying to clear out anyone from the NSC staff who is outspokenly pro-Trump and has been slow-rolling the president’s directives that he disagrees with.

According to White House sources, Trump is said to be unhappy with McMaster and has considered dispatching him to Afghanistan.

A possible replacement is said to be CIA director Mike Pompeo, who is regarded as more of a Trump loyalist.

An NSC spokesman declined to comment.

Foreign Policy first published the memo on Thursday and quoted sources as saying Trump read it and “gushed over it.”

Higgins urged in the memo that immediate action be taken to counter what he described as a campaign of subversion reflecting “cultural Marxist” narratives used by political leftists who are aligned with Islamist groups.

“In candidate Trump, the opposition saw a threat to the ‘politically correct’ enforcement narratives they’ve meticulously laid in over the past few decades,” Higgins said. “In President Trump, they see a latent threat to continue that effort to ruinous effect and their retaliatory response reflects this fear.”

During the presidential campaign, Trump was able to break through the leftist narratives and as a result the political left regards him as “an existential threat to cultural Marxist memes that dominate the prevailing cultural narrative.”

“For this cabal, Trump must be destroyed,” he said. “Far from politics as usual, this is a political warfare effort that seeks the destruction of a sitting president. Since Trump took office, the situation has intensified to crisis level proportions.”

The opponents also include officials within the permanent government apparatus, also called the Deep State.

Other opponents are supporting the Marxist subversion, including those within government, along with “globalists, bankers, Islamists, and establishment Republicans.”

“Globalists and lslamists recognize that for their visions to succeed, America, both as an ideal and as a national and political identity, must be destroyed,” Higgins said.

The political warfare campaign seeks to exploit differences in society based on sexism, racism and xenophobia narratives. The program is implemented by mainstream media, and the academic community is the main driver promoting the imposition of cultural Marxism and derivatives of it.

Islamists, supporters of political Islam in the United States, also are working with leftists who they regard as having the best chance of reducing Western civilization to the benefit of Islamic supremacists. The Islamists are seeking to divide American society against itself as a way of undermining stability.

“This is the intended outcome of hostile information cum political warfare campaigns and today we see their effects on American society,” he said.

Higgins also said a complicating factor in the political warfare program is that “many close to the president have pushed him off his message when he was candidate Trump thus alienating him from his base thereby isolating him in the process.”

The political warfare follows the insurgency methods used by Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. “In Maoist insurgencies, the formation of a counter-state is essential to seizing state power,” he said. “Political warfare operates as one of the activities of the ‘counter-state’ and is primarily focused on the resourcing and mobilization of the counter state or the exhaustion and demobilization of the targeted political movement.”

In the Marxist strategy and tactics, political correctness is being used to foster intolerance of political movements of the right and toleration of leftist movements.

The attack narratives being used are pervasive and can be seen in social media, television, and the 24-hour news cycle in all media, as well as within the foreign policy establishment. “They inform the entertainment industry from late night monologues, to situation comedies, to television series memes, to movie themes,” Higgins said. “The effort required to direct this capacity at President Trump is little more than a programming decision to do so. The cultural Marxist narrative is fully deployed, pervasive, full spectrum and ongoing.”

Information attacks against the president are carried out through overt publicity and covert propaganda and infiltration and subversion means.

The current campaign against Trump is seeking to delegitimize the president, his administration, and the vision of America he promoted as a candidate.

Key major opposition themes are that Trump is illegitimate, corrupt, and dishonest. Secondary political attacks include the notion that Russia hacked the election, Trump obstructed justice and is hiding Russian collusion, and that he is a “puppet” of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

“Adversaries utilize these interlocking narratives as a defensive political and information warfare screen that silences critics and smears supporters of President Trump,” Higgins said.

“When people in the media question the behavior, actions and decisions of the Trump administration’s opponents, they are immediately said to be ‘working for the Russians’ or ‘supporting Russian propaganda.'”

Additionally Americans who support the president are deemed “deplorable” and “racist.”

“Attacks on President Trump are not just about destroying him, but also about destroying the vision of America that lead [sic] to his election,” Higgins said.

Higgins concluded the memo by noting that defending the president is a defense of the United States. “In the same way President Lincoln was surrounded by political opposition both inside and outside of his wire, in both overt and covert forms, so too is President Trump.

“Had Lincoln failed, so too would have the Republic. The administration has been maneuvered into a constant backpedal by relentless political warfare attacks structured to force him to assume a reactive posture that assures inadequate responses. The president can either drive or be driven by events; it’s time for him to drive them.”

Twitter Grants Verification to Muslim Brotherhood’s Violent, Anti-Semitic Online Mouthpiece

Washington Free Beacon, by Adam Kredo, November 28, 2016:

The social media website Twitter is facing criticism for its recent decision to grant verification to the Muslim Brotherhood’s official mouthpiece, which routinely writes in favor of violent terror acts and disseminates anti-Semitic propaganda.

The Muslim Brotherhood–which has been designated as a terror outfit and banned by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and elsewhere–operates in the online sphere via a website known as Ikhwan Web, which serves as the Brotherhood’s “official” English-speaking feed.

Twitter recently granted verification to Ikhwan Web’s online feed, giving the organization an air of legitimacy that leading lawmakers and experts described as reckless given the Brotherhood’s history of supporting violent jihad and terrorism.

‎”Verifying the Muslim Brotherhood’s Twitter feed helps further their narrative of civilization-Jihad,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), a Muslim Brotherhood critic who has authorized legislation to designate it in the United States as a terror organization, told the Washington Free Beacon.

“This maneuver makes the Brotherhood seem like a legitimate group while providing them cover to spread their radical version of Islam,” Cruz added. “I look forward to working with the new administration to expose the Brotherhood’s efforts to increase their influence in America.”

Ikhwan Web’s Twitter feed serves as a central hub for the Brotherhood’s radical propaganda and official statements. A Free Beacon request for comment to Twitter’s public relations department went unanswered.

Twitter has faced a wave of criticism for failing to shut down various accounts promoting radical jihad and terrorism against Western countries. Others have criticized the social media site for cracking down on accounts associated with conservative-leaning thinkers and writers.

Recent tweets indicate that the Brotherhood is, via its Twitter feed, advocating continued violence and resistance against Egypt’s ruling government. It also is working to mainstream the Brotherhood as a legitimate resistance organization and governing body.

Ikhwan Web has a history of promoting violence in the Middle East, primarily in Egypt, where the Brotherhood led a bloody coup and continues to support violence against the country’s ruling authority.

“It is incumbent upon everyone to be aware that we are in the process of a new phase, where we summon what is latent in our strength, where we recall the meanings of jihad and prepare ourselves, our wives, our sons, our daughters, and whoever marched on our path to a long, uncompromising jihad, and during this stage we ask for martyrdom,” the Brotherhood said in a 2015 statement that was posted on Ikhwan Web.

The website also has a history of defending individuals accused of organizing terror attacks on U.S. soil.

Other recent articles posted by the group promote violence against the Israeli government and Jewish people, including one 2009 post quoting a Muslim Brotherhood leader as calling for “jihad” to “liberate” Jerusalem from Israeli control.

The Brotherhood falsely claims that Israel is attempting to vandalize Muslim holy sites and prevent access for adherents to the faith.

Other postings rally against “the ugly face” of Zionism.

Kyle Shideler, director of the Center for Security Policy’s Threat Information Office, told the Free Beacon that Twitter’s decision to grant legitimacy to the organization is “deeply concerning.”

“This decision by Twitter to provide the Muslim Brotherhood with this literal blue check of approval is deeply disconcerting,” Shideler said.

“At a time when Twitter is already facing criticism for banning individuals based solely on speech, Twitter has effectively lionized a group responsible for the burning of Coptic churches and the killing of Egyptian police and judiciary officials,” Shideler added. “How is Twitter supposed to help defeat online radicalization when it essentially endorses the biggest source for Islamist radicals in the world?”

Internal ISIS Documents Reveal the Terrorist Group Is Under Stress

Washington Free Beacon, by Natalie Johnson, Aug. 30, 2016:

Internal Islamic State documents show the terrorist group is suffering internal chaos amid bureaucratic infighting, failed counterintelligence operations, and embezzlement, the Daily Beast reported Tuesday.

The documents, seized by a Syrian rebel group near Damascus, illustrate a terrorist group mired in red tape as ISIS leaders attempt to impose regulations on nearly every facet of daily life in seized territories, ranging from the requisition of weapons to the allowance of vacation time.

Maher al-Hamdan, media spokesman for the Ahmad Abdo Brigade, a U.S.-backed Syrian rebel group, told the Daily Beast the documents were captured from a slain ISIS military commander who was killed in a June battle between Ahmad Abdo insurgents and the jihadists.

The Daily Beast reported:

The documents are mainly bits of correspondence between other ISIS officials and are embarrassing to a messianic movement that proclaims it is growing in strength and expanding its dominions in spite of nearly three years of attritional warfare and battlefield losses across Iraq and Syria.

One unsigned letter addressed to the so-called governor of ISIS’s Damascus province dated May 10, 2016, reports the failure of a counterintelligence operation launched against the Ahmad Abdo Brigade in the city of Dumayr, located nearly 25 miles from Damascus.

The commander tasked with leading the operation was a double agent who “gathered all the [ISIS] military leaders inside the area for the pretext of the military and security work against the [Ahmad Abdo Brigade], while at the same time he was coordinating secretly with the [Ahmad Abdo Brigade] in order to assassinate all leaders with mines/explosive devices that he was placing in the meeting place,” the letter reads.

Though the operation was never completed, ISIS’s general security officer in the Damascus province disrupted the militant group’s finances and logistics to the remaining security officers in the area.

The Daily Beast called the counterintelligence failure “noteworthy” given the earlier importance of tradecraft to ISIS’s battlefield strategy, which included sleeper cells and spy networks. These capabilities were key to ISIS’s ability to capture large amounts of territory during a period of time in 2013 and 2014.

Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, a Syrian researcher who forensically analyzes leaked ISIS documents, told the Daily Beast the newly released document “give important insight into ISIS’s ‘security ops’ in undermining rival factions in the south and reveal a good deal of internal trouble in the ranks.”

Special Report Panel Trashes ‘Single Dumbest Editorial in the History of the New York Times’

goldbergWashington Free Beacon, by Jack Heretik, June 15, 2016:

The All-Star Panel on Fox News’ Special Report Wednesday tore apart an editorial from the New York Times which partially blamed the terrorist attack in Orlando, Florida on Republicans.

Host Bret Baier first read a portion of it:

Hate crimes don’t happen in a vacuum. They occur where bigotry is allowed to fester, where minorities are vilified and where people are scapegoated for political gain. Tragically, this is the state of American politics, driven too often by Republican politicians, who see prejudice as something to exploit, not extinguish,’ continuing, ‘as the funerals are held for those who perished on Sunday, lawmakers who have actively championed discriminatory laws and policies and those who have quietly enabled them with votes should force themselves to read the obituaries and look at the photos.

The 49 people killed in Orlando were victims of a terrorist attack but they also need to be remembered as casualties of a society where hate has deep roots.’

Jonah Goldberg, a senior editor at National Review, didn’t mince words.

“I’m reluctant to say this, but that might be the single dumbest editorial in the history of the New York Times,” Goldberg said. “It’s like a pinata, you can hit it from any angle and get some reward.”

“First of all, the guy was a registered Democrat, right, he swore allegiance to ISIS and somehow it’s Republican opposition to gay marriage that is somehow associated with this? I know for a fact that a lot of the founders of the Nazi party were gays. Should we revisit the issue of Nazism based upon the fact that they were homosexuals?” Goldberg said.

“It’s one of these examples how from the top down, from Barack Obama to a lot of the mainstream media, they don’t want to actually talk about this for what it is, which is a terrorist attack, a guy motivated and inspired by radical Islamic terrorism. Instead, they want to move the conversation back to comfortable topics like gay rights and gun control, and it is just a giant con.”

Mara Liasson, the national political correspondent for National Public Radio, also had comment about the article.

“Some people have called Donald Trump a cartoon caricature of the left’s version of what a Republican politician is. This is the cartoon caricature of what people would say about a liberal editorial page,” Liasson said.

The Daily Caller’s Tucker Carlson also chimed in and took on what he believes was part of the terrorists’ reasoning after taking a swipe at Anderson Cooper.

“This is really kind of the Anderson Cooper position, which is, ‘if you have a problem with gay marriage, you inspired this attack.’ No,” Carlson said.

“This is not an American form of homophobia, this is a Middle Eastern form. So why is it America’s fault?” Carlson said. “What you’re seeing in this is very recognizable if you have talked to liberals or listened to the president, it’s ‘this is America’s fault.’ No, actually it’s not.”

Islamic State Terror Handbook Trains Western Jihadis To Avoid Capture

MEMRI

MEMRI

Washington Free Beacon, by Adam Kredo, May 15, 2015:

Affiliates of the Islamic State terror group are distributing a new handbook aimed to help Western jihadis avoid capture by the police and train them to clandestinely build bombs and transport weapons, according to a review of the guide, which is being distributed across the Internet as an e-book.

The handbook, “How to Survive in the West,” instructs Western jihadis on how to blend into their societies and hide their terror activities. This includes hiding their belief in Islam and keeping any weapons-related work confined to their homes, according to the guide, which was analyzed by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

The chapter of the manual focusing on homemade bomb-making provides tips on how to assemble cellphone detonators and other types of secret explosives.

The handbook “explains that while al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula taught its readers how to make three different types of bombs, whereas this chapter ‘will focus on six different types: Molotov cocktail, nail bomb, microwave airbag bomb, gas canister bomb, remote controlled bomb, and car bomb,’” according to excerpts of the guide provided by MEMRI.

The accused Boston marathon bombers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, are hailed as a model for Western jihadists.

“The book explains that the microwave airbag bomb was used by the Tsarnaev brothers in their attack on the Boston marathon, and that their bag contained: ‘A mini microwave oven, car airbags (containing sodium azide) or aerosol, [propane] spray cans placed in the oven, nails/sharp rocks/metal balls (shrapnel) put in the microwave oven, and a timer,’” according to the chapter on bomb-making.

“They put the timer on to when they wanted the oven switched on. When the microwave was on, it would heat up the airbags or aerosol cans. The airbags or aerosol cans would explode due to intensity in heat and pressure, forcing the microwave door to open forcefully. The nails/sharp rocks etc. in the microwave would come flying out of the microwave in the direction of the target.”

A step-by-step guide on how to construct a cellphone detonator also is included.

Instructions for making a cellphone detonator

“The principle in this is simple,” the handbook states. “Buy two cheap cell phones, wire one up to explosives (like leaking gas in a fully closed car) and use the other as a detonator by simply ringing the phone wired to the explosives. The mujahideen use this technique all around the world. It keeps you safe because you can be far away when activating the device, and it is easy to make!”

Another section of the terror guide provides tips on the best ways to secretly transport weapons. Western terrorists reading the guide are encouraged to mimic drug smugglers and other types of gangs.

The guide states:

After buying weapons, transporting the weapons and huge sums of cash/jewelry from one location to another in the boot of the car can be dangerous and will give you a long-term jail sentence. You could be jailed for smuggling, laundering and dealing in arms. The best method gangs have used throughout the world is to take your car to a garage, and make hidden compartments within the bodywork of the car. These hidden holes are usually made within the car body’s interior, since security services and border guards simply do not have enough time or equipment to search all cars for hidden compartments. Gangs place bags of money, drugs, and weapons within these hidden compartments. They then ask the lower ranked “transporters’ in their gangs to deliver and transport this car from one country or city to another without fear of being detected.

The terror guide additionally instructs any jihadi living in Western countries to make efforts to blend into society

“By not showing you’re Muslim, you’ve already excluded yourself being in the ‘Terrorist watchlist,’” the guide states. “Don’t make it too obvious you have become a practicing Muslim.”

Men are told to not grow beards and women are encouraged to avoid wearing a hijab in public.

“When a Muslim goes out in public, he wants to fit into society to make himself look as normal as possible. Remember this isn’t because he fears his Islamic identity, but he is doing this so he is not suspected of being an outsider enemy,” the guide says.

Dem Rep’s Steps to Stop Extremism Include Less Surveillance, Allow Wire Transfers to Somalia

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff, February 18, 2015:

The White House is hosting a three-day summit with more than 60 countries on how to combat violent extremism. One Democratic representative believes that one of the reasons that the United States is so susceptible to extremism is because there are not enough opportunities for these people.

The congressman went on to say that in order for law enforcement to combat violent extremism they need to limit the amount of surveillance that happens and perform more outreach. But he also warned of mixing surveillance and outreach and that the actions need to be performed separately.

In a final effort to explain how to stop violent extremism, the congressman noted the recent decision to halt wiring money to Somalia. He also mentioned that the violent extremists in the country would use this decision against the United States.

“The violent extremists wants to be able to say, ‘See they won’t even let your relatives send you money.’ They want to be able to say that and we have to be able to stop them from saying that,” the congressman said.

Obama Downplays Terror Threat: We Can’t Play ‘Whac-A-Mole Wherever a Terrorist Group Appears’

Washington Free BeaconFebruary 1, 2015:

Barack Obama does not believe the Islamic State is a threat to the United States.

“What I do insist on is we maintain a proper perspective and that we do not provide a victory to these terrorist networks by overinflating their importance and suggesting in some fashion that they are an existential threat to the United States and world order,” Obama said.

The president has been under intense scrutiny for how he has handled the Islamic State. His downplaying of their threat to national security, calling them a “JV squad” has provider fodder for Obama’s critics. In his interview with Fareed Zakaria, the president offered a line of thinking that could not be any more different than that of his predecessor.

“It means we don’t approach this with strategy of sending out armies and playing Whac-a-Mole wherever a terrorist appears,” Obama said. “It drains our economic strength and puts
enormous burdens on our military. What’s required is a surgical, precise response to a very specific problem.”

Obama did not specify what that surgical, precise response was, exactly. By contrast, President George W. Bush sounded a stronger, more defiant tone when speaking of terrorist
groups.

“Our war on terror begins with al-Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated,” Bush said to a joint session of Congress on September 20, 2011.
